05-06-05 Raw Review

Alright, here is my review of the 05-06-05 edition of Raw which is the first show of this years draft lottery.

Show opens with Bischoff saying he picked the greatest possible pick for his first pick in the draft lottery this year. Also, Coach says Paul Heyman is coming to Raw tonight and bringing some ECW buddies.

We go to the ring where Y2J comes out to host the Highlight Reel. He says the first draft pick for Raw is there and here he comes right now . . . . and it is . . . .

WWE CHAMPION JOHN CENA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Holy Shit!!!! What a shocker this was really. Raw gets the Smackdown champ as their first pick. Well, it surprised me and thats good cuz not much in the WWE has been surprising lately. Not sure where they are going with this and what it means for Smackdown as it concerns to their biggest star as well as what it means for the world title scene over there.

Well, Cena and Y2J chat a bit then Christian comes out and him and Cena talk smack at one another. Both were gold on the mic tonight, especially Cena who seemed to do better with a live mic on a cable network where his raps could get more risque. Great segment and I have no idea what to expect throughout the rest of draft or even the rest of this show. Congrats WWE for pumping me up.

Next was an alright handicap match for the IC Title between Shelton Benjamin taking on Hassan and Daivari. Shelton has been slowly growing into a big star due to his insane skills in the ring and I was expecting a title change here and thought we actually had one when the ref counted Shelton down with his foot on the rope. The match was restarted tho and Shelton won later on when he isolated Daivari and got the win. This match was decent enough but should have been better. Shelton didn't get to show off much and Hassan seemed to be tired or something cuz he didn't seem to be too into this match. Still, glad to see Shelton retain and I expect Shelton vs. Hassan one on one at Vengeance for the IC Belt.

Next, a short little backstage thing between Tajiri, Regal, and Benoit with Regal saying he didn't like the ECW style of match. A lot of little ECW things all night to hype the ECW One Night Stand Pay-Per-View this Sunday. Also, a ECW Rulz match later on between Snitsky and Benoit.

Hassan says he has grievances with the WWE for the way he has been treated. Bischoff says next week he can tell them to Stone Cold in the ring. Cool to hear Stone Cold will be back next week as it will get some viewers to tune in but Hassan shouldn't be made to look bad with Stone Cold as he probably will be. They should just have signed the Shelton/Hassan IC Title match for Vengeance to build the title up more than squash Hassan but hype Stone Cold coming back for a special appearance.

Then, a cool tho short match between Val Venis and Chris Masters. Venis got to look good here as he beat the hell out of Masters most of the match til they let Masters win with the Masterlock. I guess this makes the Masterlock look badass since he won with it after getting beat up. Sad to see the talented Val Venis used to enhance other talent. I liked this match for what it was but I still want to see Masters have the opportunity to show if he has any talent in the ring.

Next was the contract signing between Batista and Triple H to make a Hell in a Cell match at Vengeance for the World Title. This segment was good and kept at 11 minutes which is good and all the World Title scene needs as it gives the rest of the card time to shine. But I'm not pumped for this match much at all. I don't think Batista will shine in this type of match and I'm just tired of seeing this feud already. I hope Triple H doesn't win the title back at Vengeance, really. They should have had Batista in some new feuds already as this is just stale and getting boring.

Next up was a six-man mixed tag match that was Victoria and the Heart Throbs vs. Christy, Hurricane, and Rosey. Good short match here again. A short stint of action by the two male tag teams to make me think maybe a match between them for the tag titles at Vengeance. Then Christy and Victoria got in the ring and Christy snapped cuz of Victoria turning on her last week and kicking her ass. Christy got DQed for continuosly choking Victoria. Guess these two girls at Vengeance, eh. At least the storyline is going decently here. Still, Christy looked a bit goofy trying to act really pissed.

Main Event was Benoit vs. Snitsky in an ECW Rulz match. Not that good of a match as Benoit doesn't shine when he is trying to use the cheesy WWE weapons, plus Snitsky looked slow and rusty in this match. The ending was cool as we saw the Dudley Boyz come in and 3D Snitsky thru a table and then run away giving Benoit the win. A below average saved by a pretty cool ending.

Then Heyman and the Dudleys were almost arrested in the back for coming the WWE with thier ECW antics. Well it ended up where Heyman and the Dudleys went to the ring to challenge Bischoff and some WWE guys. Well, a bunch of WWE guys came out to outnumber the ECW guys. Then Heyman said he came prepared and had a bunch of old ECW guys come thru the crowd, weapons in hand, and they beat some WWE ass. Including a cool dropkick of a chair into Mavens face by Tommy Dreamer while he was in the tree of woe. The WWE guys retreated as ECW hung an ECW banner and stood in the ring triumphantly.

Cool ending and I marked out a little as I watched some ECW when it was on. I'm still not into the whole ECW Pay-Per-View thing much but this show hyped it perfectly. I'm still waiting to see how it turns out.

An insanely shocking and awesome opening with the Cena drafting, good setups for some of the feuds that will go into Vengeance, and a few other little shockers left this Raw looking great in my eyes. A few lackluster ring performances didn't hurt it much at all as the segment stuff was all done to perfection. So, with that, I will give this Raw a . .. .

Raw's Grade : A
